The Internews “Aswatouna” project is calling on Moroccan journalists to apply for attending a capacity building program on Gender sensitive reporting. The training will focus on building journalists’ capacities to report on women’s issues responsibly and sensitively, SGBV and human rights without victimizing or blaming the survivors. The main objective of the training is to provide the journalists with the tools and techniques to define and describe SGBV, and to recognize its consequences on women and girls, family members and the wider community.
Background
ASWATOUNA project aims to create a space for exchange, reflection and networking between WHRDs and women journalists to work to together to combat gender-based violence, and to strengthen their resilience against gender-based online and offline attacks. In the second phase Aswatouna project aims to Build the capacity of journalists to report on sensitive human rights issues to produce a quality of media content on SGBV.
ASWATOUNA is funded by the Office of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor of the US State Department and implemented by Internews in partnership with ABA-ROLI, JOSSOUR FFM, the Moroccan Lawyers Syndicate, the Arab Women’s Legal Network and the National School of Information Sciences and the School of Journalism.

Approach and format
Internews will select 25 journalists to participate in the training.
We encourage Moroccan journalists from media outlets and information providers (print, online, radio) to apply.
The elements covered in the training will include:
- How to define and describe SGBV, recognize its consequences on women and girls, family members and the wider community;
- How to apply ethical principles and a do-no-harm approach when reporting on SGBV;
- Ho to responsibly conduct interviews with survivors of SGBV;
- An introduction to the ethical principles of reporting on gender-based violence;
- An introduction to the existing legislation in Morocco that addresses SGBV;
During this training, participants will also work on developing story lines and research plans for stories that journalists would take to their home outlets for publication. At the close of the workshop, the most promising story ideas will be eligible to receive support from Internews.
